If something is changed to a different or less complicated form, you can say that itis reduced to that form.

If youreduce liquid when you are cooking, or if itreduces, it is boiled in order to make it less in quantity and thicker.

1. reduce的基本意思是“减少”,指重量、程度、数目、范围、速度等减少或降低,不仅可以指量的变化,还可以指质的转变。引申可作“降职”“使…陷入某种状态或状况中”“将…概括或简化”“将…还原”“征服”“攻陷”等解。
2. reduce可用作及物动词,也可用作不及物动词。用作及物动词时接名词或代词作宾语。可用于被动结构。
3. reduce偶尔也可接动词不定式作宾语补足语,意思是“使…不得不…”。
4. reduce后常接介词by表示“以某幅度减少”或“以…方法减少”; reduce常接介词to表示“减少到…”或“使陷入…状态”。
5. reduce的过去分词reduced常可用作形容词,在句中作定语。

1. 当表达“使……不得不”的意思时，更多采用reduce…to doing(动名词)，而很少用动词原形；
2. reduce to和reduce by的意义不同。reduce to表示“减少到了”，而后者表示“减少了”，表程度。
